The Union Cabinet passed the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 on July 30, laying the foundations for foreign universities to operate in India. It further stated that a new law will be introduced to smooth the way for the world’s top 100 universities to set up campuses in the country.
The legislative framework has also allowed Indian universities to establish campuses in other countries and collaborate with them in research and student exchange programmes through special efforts. In addition, mutually-beneficial MoUs will also be signed with various countries.
The policy, as flexible and multidisciplinary as it aims to be, has been framed to increase the number of international students enrolling in Indian universities. It will also make it easier for students in India to visit, transfer credits, study, or carry out research at foreign universities.
The NEP has proposed programmes and courses in yoga, arts, Indology, Indian languages, culture, music, modern India, and history along with internationally-relevant curricula in social sciences, sciences, social engagement, quality residential facilities and on-campus assistance, etc. The same will potentially meet global quality standards, draw more international students, and eventually lead to the internationalisation of education.
Credits obtained by students in foreign universities will be permitted according to the requirements of each Higher Education Institution (HEI) and the same shall be counted to grant a degree in India. The entry of foreign universities will allow special exemptions to these universities in respect of governance, regulatory, and content norms constructed for other autonomous institutions in India.
According to the NEP 2020, an ‘International Students Office’ will be set up at each HEI to host foreign students in order to attain global recognition in education and coordinate all matters in relation to international students.
The Indian education policy has been revamped after 34 years, making it the third framework to be adopted in the country since independence.
